Suki's dam, Rare Gem Apache's Polka-hontis, was the smallest cria ever born on farm. Three years ago, Polka-hontis was born a month premature... some time during the night and was found in the morning limp, life-less and just 8.5 lbs. She rallied back and became a healthy, precocious young female. By late 2021, Polka-hontis had grown to a solid breeding weight / size and was very receptive with the boys. Champion FTAF's Privateer was selected for her maiden breeding. Privateer is an elite-fleeced, handsome male known for stamping his beautiful head style and uniform, fine fleece on his offspring. He is also a producer of repeated champion offspring. So.... fast forward... 336 days. On 11/5/22, after a seemingly easy 30 minute labor, Polka-hontis, gave birth to our SECOND smallest ever cria-- Rare Gem Suki... just 9.5 lbs. Suki was fully baked, strong and healthy-- but tiny! She has confidence and personality galore! The other cria can't keep up with her. Dam, Polka-hontis', color genotype is ee a1a2 and sire, FTAF's Privateer, is color genotype ee a2a2. So this pairing was a natural for creating a beautifully expressed harlequin appaloosa. As offspring Suki carries two black alleles-- one from each parent... it is highly likely that she will darken over time as is typically of harlequin appaloosas. Polka-hontis, Suki's dam, is a great first time mom with ample milk and natural maternal instincts. Suki has gained ~ a half pound per day her first three weeks.

At first glance, Hazel Nut appeared to be a dark fawn or light brown, but as the days have passed, her coloring has begun to reveal its true complexity. Her unique coloration, combined with her pedigree, strongly suggests grey or roan genotype—a feature we look forward to confirming through testing. Diva is a super friendly, gentle alpaca and an excellent dam. She has produced show-winning crias! She has a strong pedigree in the rose grey as well as silver grey genetics. On 10/29/16, Diva delivered a stunning maroon cria. He has nice bone and tons of shiny, crimpy, bundley fleece. 10/17/18 - Faith throws a handsome appaloosa cria. Faith likes to throw fully baked cria in record time. This little guy was born 15 lbs. at 323 days gestation. This makes 3 cria for Faith in 2 years!! And all three are harlequin / appaloosas. Faith has now proven that even though she has no appaloosa-harlequin gene carriers in her pedigree, when bred to the right boy... she can reliably produce exactly what is hoped for! As tempting as it was to breed Faith to Taupie again (the sire of the first two cria), new to the team XXXtreme Spots was selected for Faith's third pairing. Spots' appy gene comes from NGG Lional-- a known appy carrier that has been well-proven in Canada but is rather rare in the United States. What is so special about Spots from an appy breeder perspective is that he carries elite-fleeced heavy hitter lines in his pedigree such as Legacy, El Nino, and XXXtreme (out of Hemingway) ALONG WITH the expressed appy gene! These elite-fleeced alpacas are known for their lasting-fineness and density. Norm Evan's skin biopsy stats are available on Spots' page. Not only does Spots sport a sweet, easy-to-handle disposition... his fleece is exactly what you would expect from such a stellar pedigree. He is super-dense and fine and FULL of crimp! Expect lasting fineness from this guy-- his sire, Sai-Hoji, was 21 micron at 11 years old! 9/22/17 - Faith throws a beautiful little harlequin female. Born at just 311 days gestation, she weighed in at 13 lbs. Faith's maternal instinct is strong and milk production is robust. At just 7 weeks of age, this 13 pound girl weighed in at 38 pounds AND it was already apparent that her fleece was characteristic of traits we hope for. This young girl's first fleece was entered in 3 shows in 2018 (where she showed as rose grey) and she held her own in competitive classes including the AOA National Fleece Show. 9/25/16 - Faith delivered her first cria (at just 310 days gestation!)-- a beautiful uniquely colored harlequin - appaloosa girl sired by Vintage Cashmere U-Taupe-ia. The result of this pairing is a true Rare Gem named Appletini! I loved the result of this pairing so much, that on 10/31/16, I repeated the breeding. Faith "took" on that first breeding and just 10.5 months later, delivered another girl! ... a beautiful "classic" appaloosa named "SPOTlight". So talk about productive... two beautiful harlequin girls and one handsome appaloosa boy... in less than two years-- and only bred one time each pregnancy! Faith has earned herself the title of the highest performing production dam on the ranch. :-) Faith is a super sweet girl. She has nice genetics in her lineage—Quijote, Danko and Lanark’s Silver Charm. Faith was shown three times 2014 / 2015 before starting her breeding career. She placed 2nd each time in competitive classes. Her 5th year (2018) histogram... Faith is still sporting a low 20's AFD, 4.2 SD and a CV of 18.4%. Gotta love this girl!!

Periwinkle is a great foundation dam. Before joining the Rare Gem line up, Periwinkle was a grey program foundation dam. She threw 3 out of 3 grey offspring when bred to grey. Suspecting that she may be a "blank", she was added to the Rare Gem harlequin / appaloosa team. Sure enough, she has thrown 2 out of 2 harlequin / appaloosas for us when bred to harlequin appaloosa herdsire, Cashmere's U-Taupe-ia. The first boy was a handsome beige with spots on his belly and legs that greyed out down his neck and topline. He has joined Sleepy Acre Farms stud row as a future stud for their harlequin / appaloosa program. Periwinkle's second Rare Gem offspring is the stunning Heart Kandi. She is the most uniquely color / patterned appaloosa to date. Her blanket is a solid dark fawn and she has black spots on her legs, belly and chin. She is a big strong cria and very loveable. Periwinkle is a stellar breeding dam... never a problem getting pregnant, holds her pregnancies, delivers large 20lb plus babies, has tons of milk and is the most attentive of moms. Periwinkle’s sire is none other than Bisturi, the legendary grey herdsire. Bisturi is a stunning grey male with a gorgeous evenly colored fleece. He has a fabulous pedigree that yields itself to producing not only grey, but quality fleece in general. UPDATE: 6/8/21 - Roxy has blessed us with another beautiful harlequin appaloosa. This boy looks just like his full sister-- Stella born in 2017. He was born 19 lbs., unassisted. Roxy is a fabulous foundation female-- tons of milk and very maternal. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 2017 - Oh, my, oh, my!!! Did Roxie ever deliver?! 316 day gestation--16 pound female! This cria is everything Rare Gem Alpacas breeding program aspires to. Unique? Well, not only is the coloration stunning, her fleece as a newborn at only 316 days gestation is at least 2 inches long and already full of crimp and character! As I watch her fleece develop, the color has evened out and is a brilliant platinum grey with a lavender tint. This girl has one spunky personality and thinks she is a mini Roxie already! She has taken on the youngest cria of the group, Silky Sam, I Am and watches over him and bosses him around like he is her own!! Epic Alpacas Guinevere is not only a beauty to add to a grey or appy program, she is very affectionate! You always want one you can wrap your arms around each day and nestle her gorgeous fiber. Both of Guinevere's parents are outstanding in their own right. Alpha Omega's Prometheus is a multi ribbon show winner. Judges have had no trouble handing him a top ribbon and have noted his fiber is as nice as a nice white alpaca. Guinevere's mother, Callista has had all quality offspring of various colors. This is the first time she was bred to grey, and she had grey! Callista is dark brown with a purple cast. Very interesting! Guinevere has exceptional genetics: MFI SCIMITAR, DOM TIMBO, SILVERSMITH, Peruvian Accoyo Felix on her father's side and 7 time Color Champion BLACK EPIC and the granddaughter of ACCOYO THE LAST DON on her mother's side! In addition to these great genetics, Guinie carries the appy gene and with a selective breeding... is sure to produce something truly special!

Krispy carries the impressive quality bloodlines of her grandsires SA Peruvian Black Epic and PPPeruvian Grand Master. This quality breeding shows through in her proud carriage, beautiful conformation, super straight topline, upright elegant neck carriage and perfectly straight legs with good strong bone. She also has amazing coverage. On June 6, 2011 Krispy had a beautiful female cria, "Dottie Biscotti" a loud colored Appaloosa with gorgeous conformation, pretty head and lovely fleece! Indian Summer is a 5/8 Accoyo and 3/8 Alianzian gal who has it all. In 2017, Eclaire was bred to FTAF's Privateer, a Buccaneer son and FTAF Blackbeard sibling. Both Eclaire and Privateer brought superior fleece characteristics, fiber stats and phenotype and produced a lovely white female cria, Rare Gem Coconut Kream. Her fiber is super fine and has lovely crimp. Eclaire's sire is MFI Peruvian Allblack, the 2011 AOBA National Fleece Show Reserve Champion, chosen out of 27 brown fleeces. His fleece is fine with carpet density and loads of character with high frequency crimp. It is so bright, it's brilliant. Allblack consistently passes on his dark colored genetics. The majority of his crias are black or dark brown girls. Look closely at his pedigree, there is not a weak spot in it. His dam is as accomplished and well-bred as his sire. This male is quality head to toe. Flawless conformation, gorgeous head, and a super nice calm disposition. He has it all. UPDATE: A few years back, Eclaire had a bout with mites leaving her nose bare as well as a couple of places on her legs. She has long since been mite-free, but the fiber has been slow to regrow. It can be a problem during the summer as her nose can get sunburnt on this delicate skin area. I keep a large mask on her during the summer that covers most of her nose to protect her from the sun. I have her on Mazuri Fiber Enhancer containing biotin and other fiber supplements. We recently started Eclaire on a new topical skin treatment Ozone Ointment with Propolis for Alpacas. Appletini is exactly what we have been breeding for here at Rare Gem Alpacas. Not only is she stunning to look at with her calico looking face, but pull apart her fleece and you find oodles of bundles of crimpy, shiny, bright-fine fleece. This little girl has expressed every color on the chart, not one pattern-- just speckles and spots from nose to toes! The unique coloring of this cria looks as though the color from her sire's Grand Dam, Chiquita Import, is coming through and producing the rarest of rare gems-- her beautiful colors seems to morph before your eyes! Appletini is sired by Vintage Cashmere U-Taupe-ia. Taupie's heritage boasts appaloosa genetics on both sides of his lineage with Aussie Rockford out of Hannahruh on his sire's side and Chiquita Import on his dam's side. Appletini's dam is "Faith", a non-appy lineage vicuna pattern girl known for her dense, but fine fleece with substantial character and nice handle. This pairing has been repeated for a Fall 2017 cria! 2017 Show Update: We just returned from California Classic and are very proud of the Rare Gem herd results. Appletini was part of the show crew along with her brother, Johnny Appy-Seed. This was Appletini's first show and she was just 6 months (minimum age) to the day at check in. Appletini was entered in two classes and received two ribbons-- a 1st and a 6th. The first place was in Bred and Owned (Dark) in which the rules are pretty straight forward and can include all colors dark including appaloosa. The class was judged 60% fleece and 40% confirmation. Appletini's second class-- Walking Fleece was not as straight forward. This class is judged 100% on fleece. Appletini was originally registered in the class as "Appaloosa", but by AOA rules, she must have 6 distinct spots in her blanket. By color-check day, her blanket was such that distinct spots where only obvious on her face, legs and belly and the color of her blanket was off-the-chart... literally. The decision was made to move her to the "grey" class as there was no obvious alignment for her on the color chart. Upon entering the ring the next day, the judge said... "this alpaca isn't grey"... which resulted in the color chart being retrieved and comparisons again being made. Again, without a match, but with a new determination. Move her to the "Fawn" class. Now, that is all fine and dandy... but that means that now Appletini is competing and being judged for "Uniformity of Color" as well as all the other categories. "Uniformity of Color" in an appaloosa? Well, the end result of all this was that Appletini placed 6 out of 11 fawns with high scores in all categories except... I bet you guessed it, "Uniformity of Color". :-)

Bella is something incredible exquisite! You will hear terms like modern silver grey, harlequin, platinum grey-- well roll them all into one and that is Bella. This coloration in incredibly rare, one of the absolute rarest alpacas colors out there. Bella is a solid platinum silver harlequin and her name, Bella Gris, meaning "beautiful grey" could not be more appropriate. Bella began life as a light fawn cria and by two years of age, she was completely grey-- except for her top-knot and leg fringe. She is completely spotless and the most beautiful light silver grey. While harlequins are not too common-- the solid, platinum variety such as this-- well, there may be a handful, at most, in the United States. So sometimes we find these special colored alpacas and then some other aspect falls short for a breeding program. Well, not with Bella. She has a very desirable build and beautiful fleece with nice crimp and lock structure. Before starting her production career, Bella had a nice run in the show ring-- 2X banner winner and 6 blue and red ribbons in just 7 shows. And for those of you wondering, she was shown in the grey class :-) Before joining the Rare Gem herd, Bella produced 3 lovely cria. Two females and one male-- all grey-- one harlequin grey!

It is with a heavy heart that I must say that this beautiful, rarest of gems died in an accident at just 17 days old. I was so inspired by this little girl after spending just 17 days with her, that I was motivated to explore the world of Embryo Transfer. We did 3 rounds of ET with her parents resulting in just one zygote which did not hold.

This beautiful young girl is sired by FTAF's Privateer-- the son of true black SHVN The Buccaneer who took his 13th banner at 7 years old! Privateer is a stunning champion that possesses awesome structure and the brightness to his fleece is blinding. He has a gorgeous head and coverage everywhere. Privateer's fleece is that "elite" fleece with bundles everywhere and secondary bundles coming out of each bundle, even down to his knee and under his belly and on his chest. Like daddy, Rum Runner has beautiful fleece character and you can feel the density. At 10 days old, she was shorn and the fleece came off in a "blanket". No fly-away tips! Runner's dad's skin biopsy results from 2017 (at 5yrs old by Dr. Norm Evans) showed a density of 71 follicles/sqmm. SP ratio is 12.1 to 1 with level 4 of 4 gland presence which correlates with what senior judges are referring to as “well-nourished fleeces”. Secondary fibers average 21.9 microns and primary fibers averaging 30.1 giving him a variation of only 8.2 microns. UPDATE On Rum Runner's Sire: Privateer is aging gracefully. Visiting stud, Springtoo Skyfall, has been breed to Snowflake for a Fall 2019 cria. Skyfall is proven to stamp his offspring with his superior fleece characteristics and when bred to color, he has thrown color. This pairing is guaranteed to throw something exciting. A bit of background on Skyfall... To date, Skyfall has been awarded three Color Championships, a RCC, two Spirit of the Industry awards, Best Hand, two Judges Choice awards, Best Crimp, Best Brightness and a handful of blues. Forget Me Not joined the Rare Gem Herd in September 2018. She exhibits all the qualities that we look for... fineness, density, fleece character, disposition... oh... I won't bore you with our long list! We love her and are very excited to see what she can do in our program. Forget Me Not was bred to the wildly spotted appaloosa harlequin, Apache Gentleman. This pairing brings a nice fusion of sought after appaloosa genetics (Forget Me Not also carries Peruvian Platinum on her father’s side). The result was a gorgeous harlequin appaloosa female whom we have named Apache's Polka-hontis. "Hona", as we call her, was born prematurely but is doing great. We have repeated the breeding for a 2021 cria. We hope for a repeat... other than the timing. Going for a full gestation this round! What else to be excited about? Silky Sam I Am is a super friendly boy. He is a favorite of every ranch visitor. He eats pellets from your hand and loves a scratch behind the ear. His fleece was entered in two shows this year and he took a 1st and 2nd place. His fleece is super soft, bright, and full of crimp. This fine fleece will make wonderful yarn for the fiber enthusiast! Sam is in perfect health and as cute as can be... but he is small for his age. Due to his size, he is not making the cut for the Rare Gem Herdsire row and is offered for sale with his best friend, Snickerdoodle. These two are great friends and should go to a loving home together. Both boys are current on shots, vaccines and recently shorn.

This handsome black pinto male is roaning out... most likely an indicator of his harlequin genetics. His sire is none other than harlequin herdsire, Vintage Cashmere's U-Taupe-ia "Taupie". Taupie is a striking appaloosa harlequin male that is on a roll for throwing spotted and harlequin offspring. He has sired 53 offspring and 74 percent are either appaloosa or harlequin! While dam selection has a significant influence on such outcomes, it should be noted that the majority of the dams Taupie has been bred to have no genetic influence on this outcome. So for those that don't have existing foundation girls with appy / harlequin lineage-- Taupie has proven to be capable of passing along his appy genetics and produce desired results. Medicine Man's dam is 3X true black champion-- Rare Gem Grace O'Malley. Grace is the daughter of Mr. Big, our resident pinto here at Rare Gem Alpacas. Although Grace is solid black, she carries the pinto gene from dad and has thrown it several times-- including producing this handsome young male, Medicine Man. Grace O'Malley tied for highest bid at the 2023 Parade of Champions auction in New York and sold for $23,500 with her harlequin appaloosa cria at side. We think Medicine Man is very special. He is a pinto pattern that was born black and has roaned into a beautiful dark silver grey. We believe the roaning out is a good indication that he carries the harlequin / appaloosa gene from dad making him capable of a huge variety of offspring-- appaloosa, harlequin, pinto and even pintaloosa!

Moses is a solid young man with beautiful fiber. He has black lipstick, black nose and black eyeliner. He is being sold at a discounted price as he does have some blue in his eyes. He will be sold in a package with one or two of his little boy herd mates once he is old enough to be weaned. This boy is growing like a weed. He is 50 lbs at 2 1/2 months old! This young male has a BRIGHT future here at Rare Gem Alpacas. He was purchased in utero with his dam, Snowmass Andean Diamond, through the 2021 Snowmass Bred Maiden Sale. Not only did we love his dam's phenotype and genotype, she has a pedigree that we had been wanting to incorporate into our appaloosa and harlequin breeding program. We hoped that our in utero baby would be a black male, but knew we had less than a 25% chance based upon the parents' genotypes. Well... the stork delivered! We got just what we were hoping for... an elite-fleeced, black male with tons of curb appeal. He has been aptly named, Dark as Knight-- "Dark" for his color and "Knight" after his sire Divine Kingship. He has sired 53 offspring and 74 percent are either appaloosa or harlequin! While dam selection has a significant influence on such outcomes, it should be noted that the majority of the dams Taupie has been bred to have no genetic influence on this outcome. So for those that don't have existing foundation girls with appy / harlequin lineage-- Taupie has proven to be capable of passing along his appy genetics and produce desired results. So how does this happen? Only part of that story is known, but what we DO know is that certain lines of known appy gene carriers are much more "expressive" than others. Taupie just happens to be one of those. "Spots" is a new comer to the appaloosa alpaca scene. Spots' appaloosa gene comes from NGG Lional-- a known appaloosa carrier that has been well-proven in Canada but is rather rare in the United States. In the past... in the United States... the appy program has been focused on achieving the spots which required certain genetic combinations, but unfortunately... not always best known for outstanding fleece qualities. What is so special about Spots from an appaloosa breeder program perspective is that he carries elite-fleeced heavy hitter lines in his pedigree such as Legacy, El Nino, and XXXtreme (out of Hemingway) ALONG WITH the expressed appy gene! These elite-fleeced alpacas are known for their lasting-fineness and density. For those looking for unique harlequin appaloosa genetics, Hercules is the guy. His dam is Tennessee Valley Tia, a lovely harlequin, and his sire is the handsome 3X champion MFI Peruvian Tachometer. Tachometer is a spotted pinto with a distinctive different look than an appaloosa or a harlequin. For illustrative purposes, Hercules' full sister, America, is shown in the photo section of this page. America is a spotted pinto expressing this interesting genetic from her father while Hercules expressed as a harlequin appaloosa, similar to his harlequin dam. As Hercules is just beginning his breeding career, it remains to be seen whether he will throw both expressions... or maybe even a combination of the two-- the ultra rare pintaloosa?! Son-Shine was born spotted as a cria but as he got older, his color has deepened and is more uniform across the blanket. He still has the black spots on his nose and has the cutest phenotype ever. Meet the newest addition to the Rare Gem herd-- Snowmass Sizlin Legacy XX! This boy is an exciting find out of the Snowmass herd. While Snowmass did not breed appaloosas, they kept detailed breeding program notes which included specific lines that threw spots and the frequency of those spotted results. Sizlin descends from an import within the Snowmass herd that threw the highest number of spotted offspring-- to a rate of 6.5X that of the others in their herd. Do we have a new gene carrier to add to the list of the appaloosa breeders?!?! Time will tell. Sizlin will be thoroughly "tested" and bred across the full range of colors of non-appaloosa carriers. In addition to having a beautiful phenotype, Sizlin has a buttery handle that opens up to well-defined spots of white, fawn, dark brown... and even grey! His fleece is extremely fine, dense and uniform. His first shearing at <10 months old yielded 8 lbs. of fleece! Needless to say, we are so blessed that Lynn Edens of Little Creek Farm has agreed to share this amazing young male. Sizlin's show debut was October 20-21, 2021 at the double show NEAOBA Alpaca Fall Spectacular and Empire Alpaca Extravaganza in Syracuse, New York. He color checked and was confirmed by the ring judges as "definitely" appaloosa. Both judges had very positive comments as to his fiber quality, eye-catching conformation and calm, pleasant demeanor. After New York, Sizlin was shown across the United States in a variety of shows. He has performed well including taking 3 Reserve Color Championship banners! Blindingly bright, silky fleece. Son of champions. Sire is 7X champion and 2021 National Brown Fleece Champion. I must say, I was a bit surprised to see the light coloration of his arrival out of such a dark pairing. Boss has been genotyped now and he is carrying a black allele! Black Diamond has matured into a handsome young man. He says he is ready to start his breeding career! His fleece is a beautiful true black with loads of crimp and a very nice handle. Diamond has the sweetest of dispositions. He loves to eat bananas, figs and pellets right from your hand. He is super easy to handle. His pedigree is full of color and well-known heavy hitters such as FMI Pistol (BB), Black Mesquite (TB), Matador (TB), Jericho (DF), Dakotia (MF), Sky King (MSG). His father (Mr. Big) is one of my main herdsires, so I would love to see this sweet boy go to someone that will be able to use him and appreciate his fiber and good company.

Rocky is a true rare gem. He is one of the only 4 Silver Grey offspring out of National Champion BMF Taos' Zeppelin. June 7, 2019... National Doughnut Day... go figure... this handsome classic appaloosa boy... Dunkin' was born. At 359 days gestation, Dunkin' weighed in at 19.5 pounds. From the very beginning, it was very clear that Dunkin's fleece was something out of the ordinary. Aside from the spots, which we had bred for, Dunkin's fleece was ultra-fine and ultra-bright. He was cria-shorn on 7/14/19 and his fleece has come in nicely. Dunkin's fleece will be ideal handspun... raw. A spinner's dream! Not one for the mill. A little about Dunkin's dam... Krispy Kream carries the impressive quality bloodlines of her grandsires SA Peruvian Black Epic and PPPeruvian Grand Master. This quality breeding shows through in her proud carriage, beautiful conformation, super straight topline, upright elegant neck carriage and perfectly straight legs with good strong bone. She also has amazing coverage. At 12 years of age, she is still going strong and an invaluable foundational contributor to the Rare Gem program. Krispy Kream has fiber and stats to be proud of. At age eleven and half (2019), she was 22 micron and EPDs in the top 5% in 3 categories (AFD, SD, SF) and top 1% (fibers >30)... 331 of the 47,399 female alpacas tested in 2019. In the past... in the United States... the appy program has been focused on achieving the spots which required certain genetic combinations, but unfortunately... not always best known for outstanding fleece qualities. What is so special about Spots from an appaloosa breeder program perspective is that he carries elite-fleeced heavy hitter lines in his pedigree such as Legacy, El Nino, and XXXtreme (out of Hemingway) ALONG WITH the expressed appy gene! Spots sports a fleece you would expect from such a stellar pedigree. He is dense and fine and FULL of crimp! Lasting fineness is in the genes, Dunkin's paternal grandfather-- Sai-Hoji, was 21 micron at 11 years of age.

He is phenotypically perfect (true eye-candy!) and eats pellets from your hand. On April 21, 2020, Boy Bob was sheared and his fiber is truly lovely! He weighed 65 pounds on April 27, 2020 (~ 5 months old). As of mid-May, we have started him on his "day-weaning"-- away from his mom and he is doing great.

And his dam is an elite-fleeced proven harlequin appaloosa producer. Well.... this time the harlequin appaloosa stars did not align and instead of appaloosa or harlequin grey, we got a handsome, well-grown white male with dark eyes and one black spot on his nose. Gotta say... as an appaloosa-harlequin breeder, was hoping for more spots or a harlequin grey. But, hey! He is handsome and as sweet as they come! On April 21, 2020, Magic was sheared and his fiber is truly lovely! He weighed a whopping 68.6 lbs on April 27, 2020 (~ 4 months old). Beginning in June, we will start Magic on the weaning process. Depending upon how smoothly he makes the transition, he should be ready to go to his new home shortly thereafter.

Tiger Lily is the spitting image of her dam as a cria. Before shearing, she looked fawn. But under that blonde was gorgeous rose-grey! In October 2017, Chanelle and her mom, Sephora, joined the Rare Gem Alpaca foundation herd (co-owned with Diamond Valley Alpacas). She is a beauty! One to keep an eye on...

Darlin' Clementine joined the Rare Gem herd in 2020. My eye is always on the look-out for girls that check all the boxes-- and Darlin' Clementine is definitely a "box-checker" and a rare find! In just two years, she has produced two beautiful classic appaloosas when bred to harlequin appaloosa, Apache Gentleman. The first appaloosa, Rare Gem Savage Love, was a handsome fellow with generous spotting through out blanket. He was purchased by Faye Farley of Majestic Meadows and Alison Mnich of Roaring Acres Alpacas. The pairing that produced Savage Love was repeated an in November 2022, Clementine blessed us with a lovely appaloosa female. While not as spotted as Savage Love, Raya Sunshine, has medium fawn spots sprinkled throughout her blanket and extremities. She is a healthy, robust female that we look forward to watching her develop. Prior to joining the Rare Gem herd, Clementine birthed two female offspring. The first was lovely female born in 2016-- Summer Shandy. Shandy is a multi blue ribbon winner with a two year histogram of 12.8 AFD and Comfort Factor of 99.2%. In 2021, we were fortunate enough to purchase Summer Shandy and rejoin her with her dam, Clementine. Shandy has been bred to harlequin appaloosa, Apache Gentleman, and is due in January 2023. Also, prior to arriving at Rare Gem Alpacas, Clementine has a lovely white female in July 2019-- Clementine's Cutie. Cutie is sired by Hobby Horse Farm's Judge's Choice Winner and 8X champion-- Dancing on the Ceiling. Cutie grew into a robust 190 lb. female. She was bred to Apache and sold to Nichole Baumgartner of Cactus Hill Alpacas in Arizona. Cutie threw a lovely harlequin male, Leo, from the Apache breeding. At Cutie's her first show, the AOA National Fleece Show, she took two 1st place ribbons. Her 2021 histogram results were AFD 18.4, SD 3.7, CV 20.2%, %>30=0.4, CF 99.6%, MSL 101. Clementine is a devout mother with great maternal instincts. She gets pregnant easily and throws large, healthy cria and has a great milk supply.

Jessica Do Right is the daughter of Springtoo Skyfall, 2X Judges's Choice winner, 5X banner winner and recipient of numerous prestiges awards including two Spirit of the Industry awards-- Best Brightness, Best Crimp and Best Hand awards! We purchased Pepper as a maiden from at the 2020 Autumn Amber Auction. Pepper is an attractive female with all of the ingredients needed for a wonderful production dam. Sire AOV Accoyo Eros worked his magic crossed over a Jericho/Jeremiah/Mr. President daughter. Throw in some Royal Fawn/Vengador on the top side and what do you get? Pepper!! ... a lovely female with very nice phenotype, an attractive head, strong well-balanced frame and a perfect bite. Prima is a proven appaloosa producer. In 2019, she threw a lovely appaloosa female out of harlequin appaloosa, Enchanted Hill LuTau. In late 2019, she was then bred to fawn male FTAF's Privateer and threw another lovely female-- this time a fawn-- RB Holly Golightly. Holly took her first Color Championship just prior to her first birthday. Holly is for sale under a separate listing. Although Prima is solid white, she has Peruvian Platinum in her lineage-- a known appaloosa gene carrier. It remains to be seen if Prima carries the appaloosa allele responsible for the patterning / coloration, but what we do know for sure, is that when bred to it, she can produce it. A fantastic dark rose grey sired by multi-champ KTL El Toro, reknowned for his fleece character, density and staple length. This girl is a charmer and will be a huge asset to our breeding program. A snapshot of her 2014—AFD: 15.93 / SD: 3.34. On 10.14.16, Tempest delivered a beautiful lavender grey girl sired by Vintage Cashmere's U-Taupie. "Taupie" is a beautiful harlequin herdsire that is known for throwing appaloosas and has a pedigree with legendary appy genetics on both sides of his pedigree. While this cria has one spot one large spot on her blanket, her legs are a beautiful dapple grey. When her lavendar tips are parted, her fleece reveals a solid-bright-light silver grey. When I tried to cria tip her, her fiber was so fine that the clippers would not cut it. This is only the second time I have ever experienced this. The baby is strong and healthy and Tempest has been a great mom-- very attentive and an udder full of milk. One additional thing about Tempest... she is a little on the chubby side. She loves to eat!! And eat... Sami is the result of a well thought out breeding decision that we are thrilled with. She was sired by High Plains Samson, a Super Sam son. Mikala is a pretty young girl with a sweet disposition. Her fleece has a nice handle with a medium amplitude crimp. Carley carries the perfect conformation, uniformity and density of fleece, and presence of her legendary lineage. Carley was shown once and took second in a large competitive class and was given strong consideration for reserve color champion. She also competed in the Walking Fleece competition and took 3rd of all the brown females AND males at the show. Stone Pine Mia is the stunning result of crossing harlequin male-- Apache Gentleman with Buck Brook Morning Glory. Mia is a solid appaloosa foundation female currently weighing 160 lbs. Mia's maiden breeding to Sizlin was 6/20/23. If this first breeding does not "take" buyer may choose a breeding to another Rare Gem herdsire of their choice. Two awesome breedings for Mia would also be banner winner RG Sea Senor (true black EE a1a2) or our new appaloosa stud, Chimbote from MaRS, a Wahoo son. Mia has a perfect bite, never had a health issue, is current on a vacinations and has a current "clean" fecal report from Oregon State University. Myrtle’s 2025 cria has arrived—and she did not disappoint. Myrtle delivered a gorgeous daughter, Rare Gem Dappled Daphne, a rare reverse Appaloosa and the very first reverse appy born here at Rare Gem Alpacas. Daphne will be retained by Rare Gem Alpacas as an important future foundation female and part of our anticipated Fall 2026 show string. We were so thrilled with this pairing that we immediately repeated the breeding, and Myrtle is now confirmed pregnant to our leopard Appaloosa herdsire, Mirakel, for a February 2027 cria. Myrtle is a large-framed female with a beautiful, feminine head style, excellent fleece density, and a calm, attentive disposition. More importantly, she is proving herself exactly where it matters most—in the production field. To date, she has delivered two healthy daughters, both unassisted, and has demonstrated exceptional maternal instincts from the moment each cria hit the ground. Myrtle is one of the very first offspring sired by H2R Motown Blues (“Mo”), an impressive Velvet son known not only for his own show record, but for his elite maternal line through H2R Seraphina—one of the strongest production females produced by the H2R program. DVAF Dear Heart is a lovely maiden with appy and harley genetics on the top and bottom of her pedigree. Her dam, DVAF Jewel-ee, is a gorgeous platinum harlequin sired by the most prepotent harlequin appaloosa in the United States to date-- Vintage Cashmere U-Taupe-ia. Taupie is a striking, well-proven harlequin appaloosa male. At the time of this writing, he has 53 offspring on the ground of which 74% are expressed appy or harley. Dear's sire is the elite-fleeced, banner winning stud--Rare Gem Harley's Davidson. Davidson is fawn like his CH sire, FTAF's Privateer, and his dam is a harlequin out of a platinum harlequin, LV Rockford's Bella Gris. Bottom line here, Dear Heart’s appaloosa and harlequin genetics run deep. While Dear’s fleece is not spotted, she carries an Ee a1a2 color genotype and a variegated coloration throughout her fleece— both data points for a great candidate for rare fleece colored offspring. And for those interested... a bit more about Platinums. Platinums are one of the rarest harlequin expressions and coveted by breeders of this type program. Dear's maternal gdam is ALSO a platinum harlequin and grey color champion. Dear's appaloosa genetics on her dam's side of her pedigree boasts Aussie Rockford out of Hannahruh and Chiquita Import. Appaloosa genetics on sire's side are a double up on Hannahruh. Having multiple platinums and on the top and bottom of the pedigree is VERY unique! Dear Heart has a soft-handle with dense and crimpy fleece. She has curb appeal galore with a pleasing head style and an extremely clean apron and lower blanket. She has a perfect bite, a clean current fecal report from Oregon State University and weighs 135 lbs. Dear Heart was shown in 2023 as fawn but was dinged in the ring for "color uniformity". As you will see from the pictures to the right, Dear's fleece carries the variation in coloration that is representative of appaloosa and harlequin genetics. While this variation is sought after in appaloosa-harlequin programs, it does not always fair well not in a fawn competition. Dear Heart's maiden breeding was to TB herdsire, Rare Gem Sea Senor. Sea Senor has been color genotyped as EE a1a2. He carries no dilution and two black alleles—the perfect pairing for expressed and unexpressed ee appaloosa females. By pairing with such a female, offspring have the potential to be appaloosa, harley or TB. This pairing stacks the odds of producing an exceptional offspring!
